From the Pike x Digital London archive: 2019 Large-scale ecommerce web design and development.

Ground Control is a large-scale e-commerce and IoT solutions provider offering satellite-based connectivity, asset tracking, and global data services.

Their product catalog includes over 1,000 items like satellite terminals and rugged tracking devices, and the site hosts thousands of product pages and blog posts.

Ground Control supports industries such as utilities, maritime, aviation, and environmental monitoring with secure, scalable solutions designed to work anywhere in the world.

The Challenge

How do you transform a sprawling IoT store into a clean, fast, and navigable online experience?

Ground Control’s old site was slow, disorganized, and built on poorly-written code, making it difficult for users to find products or access information.

With a massive inventory and content library, the platform was failing to achieve its goals: high bounce rates, low conversions, and frustrated customers.

The project needed a full redesign and recode to deliver a modern, secure, and highly performant platform that could handle scale and complexity.

The Insight

For a site this large and specialized, navigation and speed are the product.

The company’s breadth of products and deep technical content was buried under outdated layouts and unstable code.

We knew the key to unlocking the site’s full potential was to overhaul the structure, improve how users explore categories, streamline page loading, and ensure the backend could support growth. Every part of the rebuild had to reinforce clarity, reliability, and trust.

Our Approach

  • Rebuilt the entire site architecture with clean, modular code to improve speed, security, and stability
  • Redesigned navigation and UI to help users find relevant products and resources across a huge catalog effortlessly
  • Optimized page templates for product and blog entries to load quickly and display information clearly
  • Implemented caching, code minification, and secure protocols to support large-scale e-commerce performance
  • Migrated and cleaned the content, ensuring each product and post was well-structured and accessible

The Result

Ground Control began operating on a faster, more reliable, and easier-to-navigate website capable of handling its large product and content catalog. Load times improved, products became easier to find, and the team had a more manageable foundation for maintaining and growing the site.
The rebuild transformed a difficult-to-use website into a more credible and effective resource for serving complex clients and supporting large-scale IoT implementations.
